Email Access From Home

To access your campus email - you can use the web-based email, which is located at the following address:

For email access, make sure to add @uwc.edu to the end of your username. For example, if your username is JDOE1234, then your email login ID would be JDOE1234@UWC.EDU

If you are skilled at setting up home computer networks and email clients - you can also set up your home email client by following the steps at:

Please note that NO support is provided for home use through email clients.  Also, we strongly advise that your home computer have an up-to-date virus scanner and a firewall installed.

Finding An Email Address for Instructor or Student

You can find any student's or instructor's email address by using the campus email system through Outlook Web Access.

  • First, start a new email message (click the NEW button while in the INBOX view).
  • Then, click on the TO: button in the new message.

  • In the new dialog screen, start typing in the first several letters of the user's last name (that you are trying to find).  Then press the FIND button.  This will bring up a list of matching records.

  • Faculty and staff email listings will have names in Mixed Caps, while students will be listed in ALL CAPS
  • Each student will also have their campus location appended to their name.  Students from UW-Rock County will have the designation - RCK in their email address.
  • For faculty and staff, you can find their campus address and phone number by clicking on their name, and then clicking on the PROPERTIES button.  That will display a new dialog similar to the one below.

Your Campus Network Drive (H: Drive)

USB Key DiskWhen you log into the computers on the UW-Rock County campus, you will see a H: drive.  This is a private network space that allows you to save your files for classes, homework, and research.  You have 10 Megabytes of disk quota - and all of your files are backed up to tape drive every night (therefore this is a SAFE place to save your files).

In addition - no matter which computer you use, you will have access to your same H: drive.  This means that you can save the files on one computer and bring them up on any other computer on campus.

Floppy disks are notoriously prone to failure.  The simple act of popping out a floppy disk before the drive light goes out will scramble your file directories and render the disk unusable.  Dirt that gets inside of the floppy disk (from carrying in your purse or book backpack) ruins your disk as well as the floppy disk drive of the campus computer. 

If you need to use your files at home, we recommend that you use the email process (next topic) or use a USB "Key Disk" (flash disk, memory key).  The computers in the Library Computer Lab in the Periodicals room have USB ports on the front of each computer that will accept Key Disks.  These are available at most retailers selling computer or office products.

Transfer Files Between Home and Campus

The easiest way to send files between your home and campus is to send them as attachments on your email. When composing an email - click on the paper-clip icon, browse (find) the file that you want to email, then attach the file.  You can attach multiple files if you desire.

Viewing Files from Desire2Learn

When viewing files from Desire2Learn course management systems, it is much more efficient to view the files without the menus bordering the page. To launch a brand new Internet Browser page, float your mouse over the hyperlink, then right-mouse-click to bring up the short-cut menu, and select OPEN in NEW WINDOW. If the link has a document (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) behind it - it will ask whether you want to OPEN or SAVE. Choose SAVE.

If you want to save the information from a website, you can instead choose the menu option of SAVE TARGET AS and then specify where you want to save the file (we recommend your campus H: drive).

Printing out PowerPoints as Handouts (6 views per page)

To save paper and time, you might want to print out your PowerPoint presentations as Handouts -- in which 4, 6, or 9 slides print on each sheet.

  • To do this, first save the PowerPoint file to your H: drive (if on a Blackboard or Desire2Learn site - use the prior topic SAVE TARGET AS tip).
  • Once saved to your H: drive, open the PowerPoint program, and then FILE > OPEN the file you want to print. 
  • Then use the menus to FILE > PRINT, and in the dialog screen, change the PRINT WHAT to HANDOUTS.  At this point - the Handouts section will turn from unavailable (gray) to available.  You can then choose how many Slides Per Page will be printed.
