One of the confusing things about the DISCUSSION board is how to open, read, and reply to messages. It is easiest if the Discussion works like EMAIL (where you double-click on a message to open a new window, and you can then hit the REPLY button to send a message in return). Students can click on the DISPLAY OPTIONS link, which opens up the DISPLAY OPTIONS window. Uncheck all the boxes and then press save.
