First engineering faculty member hired

JANESVILLE – Dale Buechler, Ph.D. has been hired as an associate professor of electrical engineering by the University of Wisconsin-Platteville to teach in the collaborative engineering program at UW-Rock County. Buechler comes to UW-Rock County from UW-Milwaukee where he has taught engineering courses since 1999.

Buechler is the first of two faculty members to be hired to teach in the Rock County Engineering Program. He will teach Circuit Modeling I as well as two yet-to-be determined engineering courses at the UW-Rock County campus. Approximately 40 students are enrolled in the program, with 10 prepared to take Circuit Modeling I this fall. UW-Platteville plans to add another full-time faculty member to the Rock County Engineering Program in fall 2007, as enrollment increases.

Buechler holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Utah, a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering and clinical engineering option from the University of Arizona, and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, also from the University of Arizona. He is an active member of the American Society of Engineering Education, for which he currently serves as director of the Mathematics Division, and is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

The long-awaited UW-Rock County/UW-Platteville collaborative engineering bachelor’s degree program became reality in July 2005 when Assembly Bill 53, authored by Representative Debi Towns in 2001, was approved in the state budget. Co-sponsors included Senator Judy Robson and Representatives Chuck Benedict and Mike Sheridan. The approved budget included $378,300 in general purpose revenue from the state, with another $200,000 annually from student tuition to support UW-Platteville in offering a four-year engineering degree at UW-Rock County.
The UW-Platteville engineering program is the third collaborative bachelor’s degree program to be offered at UW-Rock County. The UW-Milwaukee College Connections Program, offering a Bachelor of Arts in organizational administration, communication, or information resources, and the UW-Whitewater Collaborative Degree Program in Liberal Studies are also offered at UW-Rock County.

For more information about the Rock County Engineering Program, contact Jack Champeau at 608/758-4324 or engineer@uwc.edu.
