Inclement Weather Procedures
- UW-Rock County DOES NOT CLOSE because of bad weather. That term, “closing the university,” means a complete shutdown and is used only for emergency conditions that imperil safety on campus. Examples would be loss of electricity, heating plant, water, or other hazardous condition.
- In response to inclement weather conditions UW-Rock County does CANCEL EVENTS AND CLASSES. This means that all personnel are expected to report to work unless specifically notified otherwise. Personnel who are physically unable to report to work must use vacation or compensatory time for the hours missed. The specific policy applying to classified staff is available from Business Services.
- It is UW-Rock County strong bias NOT TO CANCEL CLASSES. When snow or other bad weather is predicted, the campus typically has time to prepare. The Assistant Campus Dean for Administrative Services and the maintenance crew have a plan for snow removal to ensure maximum access and safety on campus during winter.
- For instructors who see the possibility of canceling a class because they cannot reach the campus, please plan ahead to do the following:
- Notify the campus immediately by calling (1) Business Office at 608/758-6566, or (2) Student Services at 608/758-6523, or (3) the Dean’s Office at 608/758-6522 so that notices can be posted for students.
- Plan a “phone tree” for your students so that if class must be cancelled, you can call one or two students to notify them. In turn, they can each contact several students. This consideration will save students time, inconvenience, and exposure to unsafe conditions. (Keep a list of your students’ names and phone numbers at home, as well as in your office.)
- Plan to make up the missed course work.
- In the absence of the dean, the Assistant Campus Dean for Administrative Services will be the back-up decision-maker regarding class cancellation.
- Please remember to keep the Dean's Office, the Business Office, University Relations, and Student Services informed of the cancellation of classes, meetings, or events due to weather. In the evening, when administrative offices are closed, please notify a member of the custodial staff of scheduling changes. UW-Rock County want to provide accurate information to the public.
