Jane Austen’s Major Novels
Instructor: John Pruitt
You’ve been meaning to read Jane Austen’s novels for years. She’s generally acknowledged
to be one of the great English novelists, so it is no surprise that her
novels have remained continuously in print from her day to the present. In this
course, we’ll read three mature novels and discuss them in the light of Austen’s
life and history of her times. Was Austen the “Gentle Jane” loved by the late Victorians
who discovered her, or a wicked purveyor of social satire? Did she engage
the stormy political issues that roiled Europe during the French Revolution and
Napoleonic wars, or was she on the run from them?
Ages: Pre-teens, teens and adults
Fee: $8 per session
Dates: Monday, September 28: Sense and Sensibility; Monday, October 26:
Pride and Predjudice; Monday, November 23: Mansfield Park
