Courses for Kids

Beginning Taekwondo

Instructor: Michael Plessel
Taekwondo is an exciting and powerful martial art known for its dynamic kicking and hand techniques. Although these martial art techniques are centuries old, programs are always evolving to keep pace with the rapidly changing world.

Ages: 5 & up
Fee: $50 per month
Dates: Every Tuesday & Thursday
Time: 5:30-6:10 p.m.

Intermediate Taekwondo

Taekwondo is a Korean style of martial arts known for its dynamic and powerful kicking and hand techniques. This class will cover basic blocks, kicks, strikes, forms and self-defense techniques. Students will develop skills, understand rules, and enjoy recreation through the martial art of Taekwondo.

Ages: 7 & up
Fee: $50 per month
Dates: Every Tuesday & Thursday
Time: 6:10-6:50 p.m.

Engineering/Robotics Summer Camp for Girls Going Into Grades 6-8

June 10-14, 2013

9 a.m.-noon

Just for girls going into grades 6 through 8, this camp will have you building things, breaking things and making things better! Find out about the field of engineering. Build and program robots to navigate an obstacle course using Lego MindStorm and explore engineering topics while breaking materials, launching food and building your own rocket!

  • Look at how engineers use scientific findings by testing different metals and pulling them apart
  • Use scientific models to predict behavior by launching food from the trebuchet
  • Apply engineering design principles and scientific experimentation to design, build and test a 2-liter water bottle rocket.

A limited number of scholarships for Engineering/Robotics camps are available to those who qualify for free/reduced school lunch.

Check-in on the first day is in the lobby of Allen Hall. Pick-up is at noon in the quad.

College for Kids

Tuition: $95 payable at the time of application includes one Session 1 course, one Session 2 course and a snack break). Scholarships may be available to those who qualify for free/reduced school lunch.

Dinosaur Discovery

Instructor:  Todd Levine

Learn about dinosaur biology through evidence as collected and interpreted by scientists.  Explore through interactive lessons, simulation and exploration how scientists put together different evidence to understand animals and events that happened long ago.

9:00 – 10:15 & 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

Je Parle Français  - I Speak French

Instructor:  Christianne Hanna

Take this class and you’ll be able to speak some French after just one day! Get basic language skills, such as learning colors, animals, basic counting and the alphabet through songs, stories and games  and get tips on politeness and pronunciation from a native speaker.

10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

Medieval Times

Instructor:  Christine Zastrow

Participate in projects, games and small-group activities that will teach you about life in the Middle Ages, also known as Medieval Times. Learn about the coat of arms, seals and signets; knights and the process of knighthood; and medieval attack and defense methods.

9:00 – 10:15 & 10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

Art Attack

Instructor:  Nikole Wagner

Discover great art masters like Van Gogh, Monet or Picasso each day by looking at their most appreciated works of art, and getting inspiration to imitate some of their unique styles using mixed media. Learn facts about the artist and what they were trying to express through their art, all while creating your own masterpieces.  Use acrylic paints and watercolors, on stretched canvas, canvas board and textured watercolor paper.  Students should bring an old shirt or art smock to class.

Create Your Own Boardgame

Instructor:  Jennifer Heeren

Discuss your favorite games to play and the different types and styles of games.  Explore materials available for production of games, then create the instruction manual and design a game board.  During the last week, you’ll create the game rules, design the box or bag to transport and store the game and finally play the games created by each student.

Shoebox Science

Instructor:  Jennifer Heeren

Choose from a variety of shoe boxes, each containing an experiment. Discuss basic science principles and use deductive reasoning to guess what will happen in each experiment, which can range from making rock candy or working with invisible ink to conducting balancing experiments, studying liquids and more. 

10:30 – 11:45 a.m.

Animaniacs

Instructor:  Nikole Wagner

Discover cartooning techniques using characters from comics, television, video games and the movies.  Hone your animation skills, such as showing emotion and expression;  creating movement and action; and scene setting.  Experiment with sketching pencils, crayons, colored pencils and markers to create adventure scenes in this Toon-rific class!

Tuition: $165 for the all-day program or $95 for Session 1 or Session 2 only, payable at the time of application. Snacks provided. Bring your own sack lunch.

Treasure Hunt!  Geocaching in Janesville

Instructor:  Bryson Mortensen

Go treasure hunting right in Janesville with little more than your smart phone or a Global Positioning System (GPS) device! Geocaching is an international hobby where you can find “caches” filled with treasure just by its GPS coordinates.  You can trade your own items for treasures in each cache, and even help travel bugs get to their requested destinations.  During this class you will learn how GPS systems work, sign up on the geocaching.com website (where geocaches are registered), find geocaches already hidden on the UW-Rock County campus, Rockport Park, and Palmer Park, and design and hide your own geocache for your friends to find!

Fun with Photoshop

Instructor:  Nicole Schoeny

Discover the world of computer generated art as you create your own masterpieces using Adobe Photoshop. You’ll begin with the basics – learning how to use draw and paint tools to create a simple sketch, and then bring on the fun! Learn how to use layers to add excitement to an imported photograph. Finish the week by enhancing digital pictures using the skills you’ve learned.

Stained Glass
Instructor: Richard Snyder
Learn the basic elements and principles of the copper foil technique for making stained class art, including techniques for glass
cutting, scoring, grinding and running. You’ll create your own mini masterpiece.

Lego Mindstorms Mission

Instructor:  Steven North

Start the fast track to the exciting world of robots and engineering with this class that combines hands-on science, technology and computer programming to create moveable robots.  Join in an interactive project that stimulates your imagination and creativity while letting you explore and experience a world without limits.  Learn to build and program a working autonomous robot using LabVIEW systems and Lego Mindstorms NXT robotics kits.  Student design teams will problem-solve and be ready for competition and other creative challenges.

12:30 - 3:30 p.m.

Aquatic Field Biology

Instructor:  David Bendlin

Investigate a different freshwater habitat of Rock County on daily field trips to city or county parks such as Carver-Roehl Park, Gibbs Lake Park, Happy Hollow Park, Beckmann Mill Park, and Sweet Allyn Park.  Additional sites will be creeks or rivers accessed from roadsides, such as Bass Creek and Turtle Creek. At each site, you will collect, observe and identify different plants, animals and other aquatic organisms and then release them back into the wild.

Rockin’ Rockets!

Instructor:  TBA

Learn about propulsion, navigation and pay loads and complete experiments related to rocket flight.  Then, build your own rocket to launch on the final day of class.

Upcyling

Instructor:  Christine Zastrow

Find out about the impact of throwing unwanted items in the landfill and how upcycling, or repurposing unused things into something new, can save the environment and be lots of fun at the same time. Please bring unwanted t-shirts, jeans, compact discs, permanent markers, regular scissors and fabric scissors if you have them.

Crime Scene Chemistry

Instructor:  Kristin Plessel

Discover “who dunnit” through chemistry!  This class will investigate ways to determine unknowns through physical properties of tears and soap, plus bubbly, colorful, and glowing chemical reactions.  Discover secret messages and identify suspects through blood typing and lip prints -- all through the power of chemistry!  Student skills will be put to the test by working together as an investigative team to analyze a crime scene and link possible suspects to a simulated (non-violent) crime scene.

Awesome Artists

Instructor:  Mary Haakenson

Use a variety of media, including pencil drawing, watercolor, colored pencil, pastel, and scratchboard to learn different drawing and painting methods. Explore portraits, cartooning, lettering and other styles as you explore concepts such as shading, using perspective to show distance, and color methods. You’ll work on developing the ability to understand how artists see things differently and find joy in creating art.  You’ll even have your works featured in a mini-art show as part of the class.

Show Choir

Instructor:  Fran Thorpe Peyer

Start out learning to vocalize and sing parts then get tips and practice for audition solos. Then dive in to learn new music and rehearse the pieces with choreography before performing a show on the last day of camp.
