TRIO Day
Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), that February 28, 1986, be declared National TRIO Day, a day on which the Nation is asked to turn its attention to the needs of disadvantaged young people and adults aspiring to improve their lives,
to the investment necessary if they are to become contributing citizens of this country and to the talent which will be wasted if that investment is not made.
Passed the House of Representatives February 27, 1986.
Every spring, TRIO Day celebrations at UW-Rock County highlight the accomplishments of current TRIO students and recognize the success of distinguished alumni of the program. TRIO students at UW-Rock County have gone to make contributions to the community as teachers, attorneys, journalists, small business owners, engineers, and leaders in many other fields.
During the 2006 TRIO day celebration we honored Cathy Pollard with our Outstanding Alumna Award.
Cathy Pollard is a 1997 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Rock County. She went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology (with a Criminal Justice minor) from UW-Whitewater in 2000. Cathy is currently the Director of Residential Services at Rock Valley Community Programs in Janesville.
Cathy began taking classes here in 1993. She balanced her studies, a full-time job, and the care of her own children and foster children. Cathy attributes much of her success to the support she received from the TRIO program. The staff was so helpful. I was a high school dropout, and had been out of school for many years. I was a nervous wreck. But being in TRIO was a wonderful experience. They helped me settle down, and they helped me with my study skills.
While at UW-Rock County, Cathy was president of both Student Government Association and the Multicultural Student Union. Along with fellow SGA leader Theresa Carroll, she received the President's Award for Excellence in Student Government from the University of Wisconsin System , and she also became the first student to be recognized by the UW System as an Outstanding Woman of Color.
We also recognized several students for their accomplishments in English and Math. Pictured below are two students who received our Math Award, Ken Hodges and Megan Nelson. Other students who earned Math Awards were: Heidi Chaput, Robert Crandall, Michael Gilbert and Michelle Lee. Students earning English Awards were: Will Frain, Kelsey Frei, Rita Key and Kelly Wellnitz.
TRIO Day 2008 will be held in February! Watch for more information.
