Transferring Credits and Testing Out of Classes

Credits from technical or vocational colleges are rarely transferable into UW-Platteville's engineering programs. The reason for this is two-fold. First, engineering courses must contain a significant design component, which is typically not included in a technical course. Second, engineering courses are all calculus-based, which means calculus is a prerequisite requirement in order to enroll. A working knowledge of calculus and/or the analytical skills necessary to complete calculus are used in engineering courses. These requirements help reinforce the accreditation of our engineering programs.

A maximum of 30 credits will transfer from a technical college program IF the courses are listed on the UW-System Transfer Information System. Technical college credits NOT listed on the TIS website are NOT transferable into UW-Platteville engineering programs. The following Blackhawk Technical College communication skills, mathematics and social science courses have been transferable, for example depending on a student’s academic needs: COMMSK(801) 195, 196, 197, 198; MATH(804) 195, 196, 197, 198; SOCSCI(809) 105, 110, 120, 122, 128, 154, 159, 166, 172, 174, 188, 195, 196, 197, 198, 199.

Testing Out of Classes
A student may attempt a test out of any course for which they believe they have mastered the subject matter. The purpose is to offer the exceptional student/experienced engineer an opportunity to begin course work at an appropriate level. The procedures are not intended to encourage the typical student to test out of fundamental courses.
- All general engineering courses (coded GE, EGR, GRA) are eligible for the test-out options.
- Test-outs will consist of a final exam for the course and appropriate lab test where necessary.
- A minimum passing grade of 70% is required of any test-out.
- Students may attempt a test-out of a course only once.
- After the first week of class, a student cannot attempt to test-out of a class in which they are currently enrolled.
- Students who have failed a course or received an unsatisfactory passing grade in a course may not subsequently test-out of that course.

Those wishing to test out of a particular course must work with the Engineering Program Manager to make an application to the Department Chair at least one week in advance of the scheduled test date. There are additional guidelines related specifically to EGR 100, Engineering Freshman Orientation and GRA 113, Intro to Design Methods/Engineering Graphics. Individuals with appropriate educational and/or professional experience may satisfy the requirements for these courses. Students may need to take one or both of these courses to meet core GPA requirements to advance into the engineering major, however.
