What is Electrical Engineering?

Virtually every device that plugs in or runs on batteries has had an electrical engineer involved at some point in its design, construction and development! The variety of an electrical engineer's work can range from electrons and the smallest integrated circuit… to power systems that cover entire states and large-scale magnetic fields.

Electrical engineers devise, plan, operate and supervise the construction and maintenance of a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment. Some specialize in general electronics work, while others focus in specific fields such as industrial robotics or space communications.

Students accomplish their preparation for technical specialization by completing a basic set of core courses in electrical engineering . Students can then determine a specialization by choosing from up to four areas of emphasis:

- Electronics and Communications
- Computer
- Control
- Power and Energy

Admissions Process

1. Apply to UW-Rock County

a. If you have an associate degree or bachelor's degree (not from a technical college), then apply to UW-Rock County as a “SECOND DEGREE SPECIAL” student: http://apps22.uwex.edu/pls/ea/Apply.Special?src=APPLY&uw=RCK

i. You do not pay a fee or need to submit any transcripts with this option

b. If you do not already have an appropriate degree, then apply to UW-Rock County as a “DEGREE-SEEKING” student: http://apps22.uwex.edu/pls/ea/apply.undergrad?src=APPLY

i. A $35 application fee is required unless you have been enrolled as a “degree-seeking” student at a UW campus previously

ii. See the note about Transcripts ( see # 2 )

c. List your major as “UWP EE” (Electrical Engineering Program with UW-Platteville)

i. Do this even if you prefer another field of engineering (such as Mechanical)

ii. None of this commits you to anything; it is just for routing and tracking purposes, ensuring that your information is found properly in our database

2 . Transcripts

a. Contact every high school, college and/or university you have attended and request that they send an official transcript of your academic records to us (address below). Current high school students should also have copies of ACT or SAT scores sent in.

b. Transcripts are official if they come straight to us from the school you attended. Provide schools with this contact address:

UW-Rock County
Attn: Jack – UWP Engineering
2909 Kellogg Avenue
Janesville , WI 53546

c. After arranging for your transcripts to be sent, contact the Rock Engineering program advisor so we know what/how many to expect. After we make copies for your local student file, we will forward all transcripts to the proper office(s) for  processing .

d. Transcripts list courses you've taken already that may meet requirements in our program. The Rock County Engineering program advisor will make an unofficial assessment with your file copies. An “official” audit will be done by the university's Registration office.

3 . Acceptance/Admission

a. Once your application and transcripts have been submitted, wait for an official update from the university's Admissions office.

b. When you receive Registration, Placement Testing and/or other acceptance information, please notify the Rock Engineering program advisor .

c. Placement tests (in English and /or Mathematics)  may be needed for students who have never attended college – or transfer, special and re-entry students who have not successfully completed a previous university-level English or Math course.

4 . Apply to UW-Platteville (UWP)

a. If you wish to take any UWP Engineering courses, you must apply to UWP

i. Do this only after you've been admitted to UW-Rock County(either as a “special” or “degree-seeking” student), and received a “go ahead” from the Rock Engineering program advisor

b. If you are still completing an Associate degree with UW-Rock County, apply as a “SPECIAL” student to UWP.

i. You do not pay a fee or need to submit any transcripts with this option

ii. Contact the Rock Engineering program advisor for an application

c. If you already have an Associate or Bachelor degree (not from a technical college), then apply as a “DEGREE-SEEKING” student to UWP: http://apps22.uwex.edu/pls/ea/apply.undergrad?src=APPLY

i. A $35 application fee is required unless you have been enrolled as a “degree-seeking” student at a UW campus previously

ii. See the note about Transcripts ( see # 2 )
